Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
